Reducing Paper Wastage in IIT Bombay: A Sustainable and Efficient Solution
The proliferation of posters and banners is undeniable, especially in IIT Bombay, given the plethora of events that take place on a daily basis here. These promotional materials play a crucial role in advertising and conveying messages to the wide Institute audience. However, they also contribute significantly to paper wastage, which poses environmental and economic challenges. This assignment aims to delve into the issue of paper wastage resulting from posters and banners across the campus, highlighting the associated problems, key objectives, and necessary requirements for addressing this concern.
Environmental Impact : The production of posters and banners consumes vast amounts of paper, contributing to deforestation and habitat destruction. This leads to a decline in biodiversity and disrupts ecosystems.
Resource Depletion : Paper is made utilizing multiple resources, a lot of which are finitie. Wasteful poster and banner production depletes these resources rapidly, leading to long-term sustainability concerns.
Waste Accumulation : Unused or outdated posters and banners often end up in landfills, exacerbating the global waste crisis and increasing landfill space consumption.
Energy Consumption : The production and transportation of paper materials for posters and banners involve significant energy consumption and emissions, contributing to climate change.
Human Effort : Going around the campus, putting up posters and banners everywhere can be a very tedious job. Yet it is difficult to cover all the places in the Institute ensuring they are visible in as many places as possible.
